Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship (ACGME)
Overview
Welcome to the University of Chicago Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program. We are a leading training program that is deeply committed to fostering academic excellence, health equity, and the professional growth of our fellows.
We pride ourselves in the quality of both the clinical and research training we provide. Our fellows receive diverse clinical training across the entire spectrum of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center, one of the Nation’s leading academic medical institutions. Our faculty are experts in their field, dedicated to teaching, and lifelong learners. We are equally proud to offer a research experience and educational curriculum to prepare for a successful career as a clinician-scientist or clinician-educator. We can look back upon a strong track record of developing leaders in the field and look forward to the achievements of our current and future fellows.
Our Section provides an open and inquisitive environment with dedicated and close mentoring, both clinically and scholarly, with broad and deep expertise. We are located on the campus of the University of Chicago, a world-class university in a world-class city, and are excited to showcase our program and our fellows. Please explore our website and get to know us!
Our mission is to graduate physicians who demonstrate the resilience, curiosity, rigorous critical thinking, collaboration, collegiality, and compassion to become leaders in research, health care delivery, medical education, and clinical practice in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
PCCM Fellowship

Program Structure
We focus the first two years of fellowship to intensive clinical training. With dedicated mentorship and guidance, our fellows rapidly become content experts, and many discover specific interests within the field.
Fellows can subsequently choose to pursue either a clinical scholar pathway (3rd Year) or an academic scholar pathway (3rd and 4th Years). These pathways are highly adaptable to the individual fellows’ interests and offer opportunities to engage in research and scholarly activities, expand educational expertise through programs like Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship (MERITS) Program and numerous teaching opportunities, and develop a specialized clinical focus (e.g. ILD, lung transplant, critical care ultrasound).
For those considering careers in academic leadership, scientific investigation, or medical education, our optional 4th Year provides a unique opportunity for further growth. Supported by our T32 Training Grant, this additional year offers an in-depth development of leadership skills, enhanced research experience, advanced clinical expertise, and expanded educational opportunities. It’s an invaluable chance to further hone your skills and prepare for a successful career in academia.
